According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the English adjective aerial means things or actions that are carried out in the air or by means of an airplane or other missile. The noun aerial, on the other hand, refers not only to acrobatic feats but also to aerials.

Aerial, the duo project of saxophonist Alexandra Lehmler and vibraphonist Franck Tortiller, evokes the air with its limitlessness as the medium in which the music happens. Often the intertwining of the floating sounds of the vibraphone and the melodic garlands of the saxophone seems to be located directly in the air and the capers they perform are reminiscent of somersaults, twists and the like. And the complex communication that underlies this music points to the two musicians' particularly well-tuned antennae and overview of the stylistic breadth of their field.

Alexandra Lehmler is one of the striking personalities of the younger German jazz scene. Born in Bad Ems an der Lahn in 1979, she started playing the saxophone at the age of 13, quickly made an impression and collected prizes and awards. After graduating from high school, she studied in Mannheim, Stuttgart and Paris, founded her own quartet and developed an independent profile as a lively musician with a large, expressive tone on the soprano, alto and baritone saxophone, the security and sensitivity, structure and joy of playing are almost ideal balanced. And who at the same time keeps an overview of the whole thing, both in terms of the inner connections of the music and the concerns of her ensemble and her entire profession.

As the son of a family of winegrowers and amateur musicians, Franck Tortiller, who is 16 years older, grew up in Burgundy, France. He started to study classical percussion at the Conservatoire de Dijon and in Paris at the Conservatoire Nationale Supérieure, before quickly drifting towards jazz and gaining recognition both as a soloist and as a composer/arranger with a strong sense of the richness of color in larger ensembles. Above all, as a member of the Vienna Art Orchestra and as leader of the Orchester National de Jazz, he became a regular guest on Europe's major jazz stages.

Nine years ago, as part of a German-French quintet that Alexandra Lehmler put together on behalf of the famous Enjoy Jazz Festival, the paths of the two musicians, who had traveled far and wide, crossed. It quickly became apparent that the encounter between the saxophonist, whose work focuses on the spontaneous, communicative side of music, and the vibraphonist, who had particularly distinguished himself through sophisticated large-format projects, had a very special appeal. Two kindred souls, but at the same time so different that when they meet, frictional heat arises and a tension that carries the broad arcs of the improvisational events in their music.

In the duo, Lehmler and Tortiller underline the aerial, light, floating, translucent character of their music, which, however, never seems as if it is free of gravity. From above, from a bird's eye view, Lehmler and Tortiller let your gaze wander over the wide field of possibilities that their music offers them. Sometimes they encounter a jazz standard, sometimes a lullaby or a classical aria. The antennas are extended. Aerial, the duo of dissimilar soul mates, takes the signals and transforms them into something new, into music that twists and turns, that seems to dance all around and lets sparks fly.

Aerial, le projet en duo de la saxophoniste Alexandra Lehmler et du vibraphoniste Franck Tortiller, évoque l’élément air et son absence de limites comme le médium dans lequel leur musique évolue. L'entrelacement des sons éthérés du vibraphone et des ornements mélodiques du saxophone semble évoluer hors de toute pesanteur, rappelant de multiples sauts, vrilles et autres acrobaties. L’interplay comme de définissait Bill Evans est ici omniprésent . L’écoute, l’échange, la prise de risque , tout ce qui fait le jazz aujourd’hui est dans la musique de ce duo. 

Alexandra Lehmler est l'une des personnalités les plus marquantes de la jeune scène jazz allemande. Née en 1979 à Bad Ems an der Lahn, elle débute le saxophone à l'âge de 13 ans, et fait rapidement impression en multipliant les prix et les distinctions. Après le baccalauréat, elle étudie à Mannheim, Stuttgart et Paris, puis fonde son propre quartet. Elle développe un profil de musicienne singulière au large son expressif et plein de vie, que ce soit aux saxophones soprano, alto ou baryton. Tout en développant ses projets, elle a à cœur de conserver une vue d'ensemble sur le monde musical et d’être engagé dans la défense des intérêts de tout son métier. 

Fils d'une famille de viticulteurs et de musiciens amateurs, Franck Tortiller  a grandi en Bourgogne (France). Il étudie d'abord les percussions classiques au Conservatoire de Dijon et à Paris au Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique (CNSM), avant de se spécialiser rapidement vers le jazz et d'être reconnu, aussi bien comme soliste que comme compositeur/arrangeur. Il est doté d'un sens aigu de la richesse de couleurs des grands ensembles et c'est notamment en tant que membre du Vienna Art Orchestra et de directeur de l'Orchestre National de Jazz qu'il est devenu un invité régulier des grandes scènes de jazz européennes.

Il y a neuf ans, dans le cadre d'un quintette franco-allemand qu'Alexandra Lehmler a réuni à la demande d’"Enjoy Jazz », les chemins de ces deux musiciens qui ont beaucoup voyagé. Il est vite apparu que la rencontre entre la saxophoniste, dont le travail est axé sur le côté spontané et communicatif de la musique, et le vibraphoniste, qui s'est distingué par des projets raffinés en grands formats, avait un charme tout particulier. Deux âmes sœurs, mais en même temps si différentes, que leur rencontre fait naître une chaleur, une proximité et une tension qui porte grand les arcs de l'improvisation de leur musique. 

En duo, Lehmler et Tortiller soulignent le caractère aérien, léger, flottant, translucide de leur musique, qui n'a pourtant jamais l'air d'échapper à la pesanteur. D'en haut, à vol d'oiseau, Lehmler et Tortiller laissent leur regard vagabonder sur le vaste champ de possibilités que leur offre la musique. Ils rencontrent tantôt un standard de jazz, tantôt une berceuse ou même un aria classique.

Aerial, das Duo-Projekt der Saxophonistin Alexandra Lehmler und des Vibraphonisten Franck Tortiller evoziert die Luft mit ihrer Grenzenlosigkeit als das Medium, in dem die Musik passiert. Oft scheint das Ineinander der schwebenden Klänge des Vibraphons und der melodischen Girlanden des Saxophons direkt in der Luft angesiedelt zu sein und die Kapriolen, die sie schlagen, erinnern an Salti, Schrauben und Ähnliches. Und die vielschichtige Kommunikation, die dieser Musik zugrunde liegt, deutet auf die besonders gut abgestimmten Antennen und den Überblick den beiden Musiker:innen über die stilistischen Weiten ihres Fachs. 

Alexandra Lehmler ist eine der markanten Persönlichkeiten der jüngeren deutschen Jazzszene. 1979 in Bad Ems an der Lahn geboren, begann sie mit 13 Saxophon zu spielen, machte schnell Eindruck und sammelte Preise und Auszeichnungen. Nach dem Abitur studierte sie in Mannheim, Stuttgart, Paris, gründete ein eigenes Quartett und entwickelte ein eigenständiges Profil als eine quicklebendige Musikerin mit einem großen, ausdrucksstarken Ton auf Sopran-, Alt- und Baritonsaxophon, die Sicherheit und Sensibilität, Struktur und Spielfreude geradezu idealtypisch ausbalanciert. Und die zugleich den Überblick über das Ganze behält, sowohl was die inneren Zusammenhänge der Musik als auch die Belange ihres Ensembles und ihres ganzen Metiers betrifft. 

Als Sohn einer Familie von Weinbauern und Amateurmusikern ist der 16 Jahre ältere Franck Tortiller im tiefen Frankreich, im Burgund, aufgewachsen. Zunächst studierte er Klassische Perkussion am Conservatoire de Dijon und in Paris am Conservatoire Nationale Supérieure, bevor er zügig in Richtung Jazz driftete und sowohl als Solist wie auch als ein Komponist/Arrangeur mit ausgeprägtem Gespür für den Farbenreichtum größerer Ensembles Anerkennung fand. Vor allem als Mitglied des Vienna Art Orchestra und als Leiter des Orchestre National de Jazz wuchs er zu einem festen Gast auf den großen Jazzbühnen Europas.

Vor neun Jahren, im Rahmen eines deutsch-französischen Quintetts, das Alexandra Lehmler im Auftrag von Enjoy Jazz zusammenstellte, kreuzten sich die Wege der beiden weit herumgekommenen Musiker:innen. Schnell zeigte sich, dass die Begegnung der Saxofonistin, deren Arbeitsschwerpunkt auf der spontanen, kommunikativen Seite der Musik liegt, mit dem Vibraphonisten, der sich vor allem durch raffinierte Projekte im Großformat hervorgetan hatte, einen ganz besonderen Reiz hat. Zwei verwandte Seelen, zugleich jedoch so verschieden, dass in ihrem Zusammentreffen Reibungswärme entsteht, und eine Spannung, die die weiten Bögen des Improvisationsgeschehens ihrer Musik trägt. 

Im Duo unterstreichen Lehmler und Tortiller den aerialen, leichten, schwebenden, durchscheinenden Charakter ihrer Musik, die jedoch nie so wirkt, als sei sie der Schwerkraft enthoben. Von oben, aus der Vogelperspektive, lassen Lehmler und Tortiller den Blick schweifen über das weite Feld an Möglichkeiten, das ihnen ihre Musik bietet. Mal treffen sie auf einen Jazzstandard, mal auf ein Wiegenlied oder auch auf eine klassische Arie. Die Antennen sind ausgefahren. Aerial, das Duo der so ungleichen Seelenverwandten, nimmt die Signale auf und verwandelt sie in etwas Neues, in eine Musik, die sich dreht und wendet, die rundum zu tanzen scheint und die Funken sprühen lässt.
